It’s the little things that count.

“It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most. Not where you live, what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes There's no dollar sign on peace of mind .This I've come to know.

Zack Brown Band

We spend so much of our energy and efforts conquering the big things in life. Securing a good job. Buying a house. Planning for our retirement. And these things are all very important. Providing for our families and future is imperative to have security and peace of mind in our lives.

However, the real joys in life are all the little moments of connection, compassion, love, friendship, and grace. Moments that we don’t plan for or anticipate. Moments that happen by just being present in the lives of those we love and care about.

In the beginning of relationships, we are so much better at doing the little things that make others know how we feel. When we are first dating, we do lots of little things to make our partner know that they are special. We want them to see the best in us and of us. As we get more comfortable these simple acts become more rare. We get complacent.

It is a bit ironic in that we go the extra mile to convince someone to love us and then once they do, we stop going the extra mile. It seems like we should be doing more little things for someone that has committed their love to us.

We should keep “dating” our spouses. Keep reminding them how important they are and how much they mean to us. Keep convincing them that they made a great decision in choosing us. Arranging a date night. Buying a “just because” gift. The little things.

My wife makes the best blackberry pie on the planet. It is always my choice for my birthday. There is nothing better than a warm piece of blackberry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on it for breakfast. A few weeks ago I came home from playing golf to the smell of warm blackberry pie in our kitchen. Nikki looked at me and said, “I thought you needed a blackberry pie.” It’s the little things. She reminded me that she knows me, she was thinking about me, and that she cared about me. Made me feel special.

Embrace the small moments in life and be sure to take a breath and enjoy them. Slow down and remind the ones you love of their place in your heart. Plan for the big things in life, but live for the little things.
