Not sure who is teaching who?

Almost 6 years ago, this little soul entered our lives. He showed up early and gave us all a scare. He was small and fragile. He wasn’t in any hurry to talk to anyone. He figured out how to communicate with us without uttering a word for a very long time. Looking back, I think he wasn’t sure if we were worthy of his thoughts just yet.

Pap and Thomas

This little guy has shown me more love than I could ever deserve. He grabs my hand while we are walking, he is in touch with people’s feelings, he melts my heart in so many ways. He brings people together and he shares his love with everyone. An old soul lives in his little body.

As evidence, we walked over to his school to pick him up a couple months ago. As we are waiting another little boy comes out of the gym with his aid. Thomas comes out a few seconds later and walks over to the boy and says “this is my Mimi and this is my Pap” to introduce us to his friend. He has introduced me to several of his friends as we have left the school. What 5 year old does that?

Thomas has been such a blessing to so many people. He has made all of us better by his presence in our lives. His mom sent me this text earlier this week that melted my heart and was another example of what a special little dude he is.

Momma, do you know how much my Pap loves me? So much that one time he cried he was so happy to see me, I think that means he loves me a lot
— Thomas

Thomas and Maverick

I used to listen skeptically as I heard other grandparents talk about how wonderful it was to be a grandparent. But they were right. There is nothing like it. They teach us about love and remind us to be better people. They truly are a blessing.

I feel a strong sense of responsibility to share my experiences and teach Thomas things that he will need to know in life. But, I find that he is usually the one teaching me. We should all see the world as he does. Pure, full of possibilities, full of love, and full of new adventures. He doesn’t see skin color, social standing, disabilities, or age. He just sees people. What a better place it would be if we all see the world through his eyes.

When you have a grandchild, it fills a space in your heart that you never realized was empty.
